Manufactured Log Homes

Many people are choosing cedar manufactured log homes over pine or other species. Cedar has those natural characteristics which make it so popular for manufactured log homes, such as being a natural insect repellent and a rot and decay resistant wood. Cedar is a wood with low moisture content, too. This means it will have minimal cracking.  Cedar weathers to a beautiful gray/silver color. Many people who purchase cedar manufactured log homes will go on to apply a finish to it. If you would like to apply a natural finish or transparent stain to it your new cedar log home you should get suggestions from the dealer on which products are recommended.

Many people purchase log home kits. If that is something you are interested in doing you should familiarize yourself with some of the log home terms. Cants are made from logs that are brought into a mill from loggers. The logs will be stripped of bark, run through saws and made into four sided timbers. The cants are then used to make logs, siding or dimensional lumber. Chinking is the word used to describe the filling that goes between rows of logs in a log home. Chinking is most often used where rows of logs do not weight directly on the row of logs below it. These rows are separated by a space of at least one inch, possibly more. Dovetail Corners is the corner method used mainly on log homes that use square or rectangular logs. The ends of the logs are cut in such a way that they make a fan-shaped wedge. When the logs are stacked the end of one wall will lock with the log end of another wall.

Corner notch is a cut made into a log that will allow it to interlock with another log at the corner. There are many different corner notch styles. They type of notch you choose will determine the way your log corners appear.  “Green logs” is the term used to describe logs that are freshly cut, sometimes days or weeks old.  Green wood is the term used to describe any wood that has a moisture content above 28% is considered green, no matter how long it may have been milled. Hand peeled is a term that describes the process of taking the bark and outer layer of a log off. There are some log manufacturers that use machines to get the hand peeled look. However, true hand peeled logs are usually stripped with a drawknife.

A basic log package will come with the materials and services that you will need to have a log wall system in your log home. You can have a log package be as extensive as you would like it to be including construction services and handcrafters.  If you are planning to look into manufactured homes, you should take a look at manufactured log homes. They are very beautiful and will fit perfectly into any environment.
