![]() Prefab HomesWhile shopping for a new home, you may come across the phrase prefab homes many times. Depending on the person you’re talking with, it could mean one of many different things. There are many levels of prefabrication, from homes that are completely built at a factory and transported to a site to homes that have just a few components pre-assembled at a factory and the rest standard built at the site. No matter which level you choose, you will almost certainly save money over having a new standard, stick built home constructed. Looking at all of these types of homes will open doors that you never knew existed during your home search. The type of housing most commonly associated with prefab homes is single wide manufactured homes. Typically, when a buyer hears the word pre-fabricated, it makes them think that the home is delivered completely assembled. In the case of a singlewide home, this is generally true. All actual construction of the structure is done at a factory, including installing the carpets, plumbing, and electrical. When the home arrives at the site, all that must be done is anchoring it to whatever foundation has been chosen and connecting the utilities to the home itself. This is probably the most economical and simple choice in a prefabricated home, though you have much more selection with some of the other options. Another option you have in purchasing prefab homes are modular homes. These usually are built at the factory in sections and these sections are transported to the home site separately. Then you must have a construction crew assemble the sections and finish out the plumbing and electrical work before the home is ready to be occupied. These are slightly more labor intensive than the singlewide homes, once they leave the factory. However they can still save quite a bit of money than having your home custom built. One of the most interesting option in prefab homes are the kit homes that are on the market today. There are hundreds of style possibilities with a kit home. There are traditional styles, log homes, modernist models and many others. The design can even be custom made to your own liking. The materials for these homes are precut at a factory and then shipped to the home site. You must then have the home assembled from the kit, have all wiring and plumbing put in and all the finishing work done before the home is ready for occupation. This is quite a bit more labor intensive than the previous options, however, since the materials are prepared in advance, cheaper and less time consuming that some stick built homes. There are so many options for prefab homes, seeing them all would take an immense amount of time. However, if you’re on a time schedule to get moved into your house, checking out a few of these options would probably benefit you. Depending on your budget and financing needs, you may find that one of these homes would give you a lot more for your money. Do a little research on prefab homes; you may find the perfect home for you.
