Building Construction

The home building construction process can seem very daunting to someone who has never been through it before. Here is a general overview of what goes into the home building construction process. It is important to note that your home building construction project will be unique and personal and that this is just a general guideline of the home building process.

  • First, you will have to get temporary electrical service to the site where you are building your home. You should also arrange for a portable toilet to be on site.
  • The area where the home will be will need to be staked out. This is to prepare for excavating, utilities and any temporary driveways into the site.
  • Once the site is staked out, anything that is in the way of the home building construction process will have to be removed. This includes fencing, trees, debris, rock and more.
  • The excavator will come in and start digging.
  • Once your basement is dug, you will have to arrange for the pouring of the footings and foundation walls.
  • It is important to know that if you plan on having a septic system that a sleeve will have to be installed into the home’s foundation wall. This will lead to the sewer. Any other openings should be made at this time, too.
  • After the footings and foundation walls are done, this is when any steel beams that are necessary in the home building construction will be installed. Drain tiles will also be installed and waterproofing will be applied to the exterior walls.
  • After the concrete has cured, about a month, backfilling should commence and framing can begin. The walls, floors, ceilings and roof should be framed. Roof sheathing can not commence.
  • The house can now be roofed and wrapped. Windows and doors can be installed as well as siding. After the framing is underway and nearing completion rough plumbing can begin. Any masonry projects can begin, too, such as fireplaces and chimneys.
  • Next, ducts can be installed, as well as gutters. The electric can also be roughed in.
  • At this stage you will have roof, windows, rough plumbing and electric, sewer and water lines going into your basement. You can now pour your basement’s concrete, sidewalks, garage floors, AC pad and more.
  • It is important to note that in some areas before any interior walls can be covered the home building construction site must be inspected.
  • Drywall can begin, flooring can be put down, cabinets and appliances can be installed.
  • Electrical and plumbing will be finished, your AC and furnace will be installed and you can hook up your telephone service.

At this point, your home building construction is nearly over. All that you will have left is oversee that everything you have contracted out to be done is completed, you know what type of home décor you want and you have a good idea of what you want in way of landscaping.
