Building Prefab

Have you ever stood in line at your local big-box home improvement store and wistfully leafed through the pages of the checkout stand magazines that showed floor plans of beautifully designed wood cabins?  Have you taken more than a passing interest in those plans and perhaps even purchased one of these magazines and in doing so have realized that – with just a bit of help from your buddy who is a plumber and your cousin who owns an electrician’s business – you, too, could put together a home like this?  Have you ever dreamed of putting a building – prefab or otherwise – on that plot of land you own in the mountains, but you have hesitated simply because you do not want to incur the expense of entrusting a builder with the project?  If this is you, then building prefab homes might be the perfect solution!  Did you know that these homes are designed by world famous architects whose original blueprints you can now purchase at a fraction of the price?

It is true!  A whole new cottage industry has sprung up around building prefab homes, cabins, and even business venues, and builders have begun to now woo the do-it-yourself market in a much more aggressive manner than they did previously.  Perhaps it is due to the construction slow downs that are being experienced throughout the nation, or maybe it is because builders and especially manufacturers of modular homes have realized that they can pre-cut and pre-package a home to such an extent that it can be shrink wrapped and delivered to a homebuilder or do-it-yourselfer who will assemble it themselves. The new wave of building prefab is definitely catching on slowly but steadily, and more and more potential homeowners like the idea of being in charge of such a project from start to finish.

For those considering building prefab, it is imperative to understand that with the new popularity of this mode of home building, there are new innovations coming daily and there is definitely a lot of room for individuality and personal tastes.  As a matter of fact, if you are desirous of owning a famous architect’s plans, you will be able to do so. If modernist design is on your mind, you will once again be able to accommodate the hankering for being different and avant-garde. Should you prefer just a plain old cabin in the woods that speaks of rustic design, this, too, can be accommodated. The sky is literally the limit of prefab housing you will be able to build on your plot of land. Obviously, if you are contemplating going this route, you will want to make sure that you have what it takes to not only begin the job but to also finish it.  For example, you will need to make sure that your land is zoned for what you have in mind.  Secondly, if you own land that is part of a homeowner association controlled tract, you will need to get permission to erect a modular structure.  Believe it or not, some still require special permits and may not let you do so!  So be aware of the rules and regulations before you order!
